@at Well, like other services, they collect data about publications. That does not mean that the authors are counted towards their users - otherwise I would expect far more than 1m users (more in the range of 100m or so)

@at As far as I am informed, researches from a big variety of disciplines use services like Mendeley. So a million users would not surprise me - they seem to be quite well received.

Ok, I think I know now the answer. I can see my papers on that service too, although I've never uploaded them :) So it seems that mendeley is aggregating papers (and maybe also authors and institutes) automatically. Therefor their numbers are so huge!!!

However, one thing, I cannot believe, that mendeley has already almost a million of users and 23K institutions??? Sounds like random numbers for me to attract more people. I hardly believe that researches are using that kind of web-service.

Sign-up is a usual thing on every web2.0 site, so you shouldn't be that skeptical. Zotero seems to look little bit outdated, the interface in the software is pretty desktop-like and a bit ugly. Mendeley, at least on the front-page, goes more web2.0 way!
